90's bin (Left) The more stylish bins in use today.

The Old Grammar School

Old Grammar School
The old Grammar School has changed little during the last century, whilst everything around it has been the subject of major upheavals. These were:

1. This section of Symingtons' factory between Factory Lane and Adam and Eve street was demolished shortly after this photograph was taken.

2. The bell tower survived the demolition of the factory, and is now located in one of the gardens in Welland Park.

3. The litter bin shown here was typical of 70's styled bins around the town centre. These were replaced in the early 90's, when the town had yet another face lift after the introduction of the North - South A6 bypass.

4. Jenith's Hair Styling Studio to the south side of the School. No longer in existence.

5. Nolans jewellery shop was to remain here for another 20 years until the development of the new shopping precinct - St. Mary's Place in 1993. The company moved premises to the corner of St. Mary's Road and Northampton Road, near the gateway to St. Mary's Place. The building now houses the Lloyds TSB Bank.

6. The car in the photograph shows how traffic from Roman Way came round the back of the Old Grammar School and on to the High Street, near Nolans, before pedestrianisation in 1993.

7. In the late 70's, parts of the town centre were modernized. The chequered slab and cobble design shown here was also used on The Square around the War Memorial. This design was changed again in the 90's.
