Harborough - Rugby Line Bridges

Northampton Road Railway Bridge.
Picture - Alan Marks
In 1850, a Rail Link was established between Market Harborough and Rugby. The pictures shown here were taken around 1969, and show the town's two railway bridges on the line at that time. Although the line had been closed by the time these photographs had been taken, the bridges stood until sometime in the 1980's, when they, and the line was dismantled and levelled to make way for housing.

The one above stood on the Northampton Road near the Welland Park turn (looking South). To the left of the picture would have stood the old swimming baths.

Below is the Farndon Road bridge (looking North). The two Poplar trees mark the junction with Welland Park Road. These were subsequently felled before a mini roundabout was installed. Rugby Close and Farndon Court now stand where the line used to run.

Both bridges were prone to flooding during their existence. After the line was closed and the rails were removed, the route became overgrown, and a haven for wildlife. This made it a popular walkway with local people for a time, before being reclaimed for housing.
