Market
Harborough
Market Harborough lies on the southern border of Leicestershire in the fertile
Welland Valley. This market town, dating back to the early 13th
century, enjoys good commuter links, being situated on the Midland
Mainline railway, and just a few miles drive from the M1, A1 and
A14, and about an hours drive from East Midlands Airport. The town
is also accessible by the Grand Union Canal which terminates at Union Wharf on the northern border.
Architecture
There's a wealth of old and important buildings to see here, of
which the most notable being the Old
Grammar School, St Dionysius church and the Town Hall, all situated in the High
Street.
Shopping
A shoppers haven, with low cost parking
and recent additions to the shopping area such as Manor
Walk, and more lately St. Mary's Place,
along with a covered market three days
a week, make this an attractive place to shop. Five major supermarkets
are within easy reach of the town centre. A large proportion of
the shopping centre has been redesigned in recent years, resulting
in Harborough winning the Highway category of a Street Design competition
in 1997.
There are two night clubs for those seeking the night life as well
as a multitude of pubs and restaurants, and a Theatre close to the town centre.
Sport
For the sporting minded, there's a Leisure Centre on Northampton
Road where you can go for a swim, train in the gym or play badminton
etc. Kibworth Rugby Club have a ground in Northampton road, where
there is also a brand new Indoor Bowling hall. Tennis courts are
provided in the Welland Park, along with
Bowling Greens and there are other greens on the Kettering road,
and at the Conservative Club in Fairfield Road. Harborough Cricket
Ground is located on Fairfield Road where there is also a Squash
Club. Harborough Golf Course is situated just outside the town on
the A508, Northampton Road, and for those who like horse racing,
events are held periodically throughout the season a couple of miles
away at Dingley. For motor racing fans, there's the new Rockingham
Speedway within easy reach west of the town.
Leisure
Several good walkways exist around the town. These include the tow
path on the Grand Union Canal starting at the Basin, The Millennium Mile Walk along
the river Welland, and Brampton Valley Way which is along the disused
railway line just off the Northampton road. The Millennium Mile
and Brampton Valley Way are part of Route 6 of the National Cycle
Network. Youngsters might like to try their hand at skate boarding
at the recently renovated skateboard park in Little Bowden, and
now a brand new Skate Park in the Welland Park. For less energetic
pastimes, there is the Penn Lloyd Library in the old Symingtons building on Adam & Eve
street, which also houses the towns Museum.
Gardens
Gardens to look round include those in the Welland Park, which have spectacular flower
displays especially in the summer, and the Remembrance
Garden in the town centre located near The
Square, has a particularly tranquil air to it.
