St. Mary of Arden![]() The ruin of the medieval church St. Mary of Arden stands just off the Great Bowden Road. Although the original building dates back to the 12th century, the oldest section today is the 14th c. Norman porch, inside of which, there is a fascinating though somewhat weathered 14th c. effigy of a lady. At one time, the church had a steeple, but this collapsed during the middle of the 17th century. The
roof was dismantled in the 1950's and the remains of the inside are kept
locked, but a key is available from the Council offices, should you wish
to go in.Many of the headstones have been moved over the years to encircle the church, while others have been arranged neatly round the inside walls as shown opposite. The moss covered font stands as a solitary remnant of a once thriving, little chapel of years gone by. |
