Symington's Soup factory

Old Symington's Offices
Former Offices
This impressive stuccoed Regency Terrace is a grade II listed building and stands on the Northampton Road. It features arched windows and doorways, and has some elegantly curved cast iron balconies on the first floor windows (not very clear on the photograph). The building formerly housed part of the Symingtons soup factory offices (later to become HP Foods). The business was started by William Symington and later handed down his son Samuel.

The picture opposite shows the Springfield Street section of the factory, known as Springfield House. Another grade II listing building, it was built in 1881, it was a coffee mill up until 1920.

Closure
HP Foods closed the factory in 1997, and plans for redevelopment of other parts of the factory were submitted to Harborough District Council by the Supermarket chain Sainsbury. This resulted in their sister store Homebase being built on the site, along with a shoe and saver shop.
